Question time:

Just wanting to get a little dialog going, see who does what out there. :)

If you perform, do you consider your style to be classical or neoburlesque? Do you dabble in both? Which do you prefer?

At least with my troupe, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a lackluster or unenergetic performance receive the response of, “be more drag”.

vampirique asked: I want to try burlesque, but i feel intimidated by the fact that i don't consider myself beautiful enough; meaning that i don't have those absolutely gorgeous, voluptuous bodies that you burlesque dancers have. There's a place where i can educate myself more about this type of art?

Answer:

First of all, burlesque is for ALL women of ALL body types. There are girls in my troupe who are anywhere from size 00 to size 20something…it’s all about attitude!

As far as where to learn, see if there’s anything in your community. It seems like lots of troupes are popping up all the time; if there’s one around, definitely talk to the girls involved. In my area, the burlesque and bellydance communities are actually fairly tight knit, so possibly talk to them too. Or, if there’s nothing immediately nearby, often a couple hour roadtrip will take you somewhere that DOES have a scene where classes are available. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of the internet - sites like MinistryofBurlesque.com are great places to start. And I can’t say enough about YouTube - you can find examples of literally any style of burlesque imaginable.

Good luck!
